A large—scale transformation of the digital infrastructure is starting in Bhutan – the national identification systеm will move from Polygon to Ethereum. This step is due to the desire to strengthen the protection of personal data of citizens. Integration work is already underway, and migration is scheduled to be completed in early 2026. The project was initially launched in August 2024, but now the authorities see Ethereum as a more reliable basis for long-term development.

Officials emphasize that the new platform will be based on the principles of self-confident identification. This means that each of the nearly eight hundred thousand residents will gain full control over their digital data, using it to interact with government services without the risk of leaks or unauthorized access. This approach sets the country apart from other government initiatives in the field of digitalization.
